Dj Marlboro
Dj Marlboro aka Fernando Luis Mattos da Matta is a national institution in his home land. Known as the 'ambassador of funk' Dj Marlboro has played a large part in the spread and growth of Baile Funk. He has been Djing for 24 years and has been part of the scene since its foundations.
In 1985 Marlboro was given a drum machine by the well know anthropologist Hermano Vianna. This machine was to prove crucial in the development of Baile Funk allowing Marlboro to produce his own beats and to pioneer a new unique Brazilian sound. A trip to America in 1989 on a record buying spree allowed Marlboro to return home with a collection of 12" Miami Bass vinyl. He started playing the music in clubs, 2 Live Crew, and Dj Magic Mike were rocking the dance floors. Djs and producers began to be influenced by this new electronic bass orientated sound and quickly began to produce there own Brazilian flavours.

In 1989 Marlboro released his 'Funk Brasil' compilation. The first of its kind to contain purely Brazilian produced track by Marlboro. This was a huge success selling over 250,000 copies. In this same year Marlboro entered the Technics Dj championships in Rio de Janeiro. He won the competition and flew to London, gaining recognition as one of the world best Djs.
Marlboro now runs and owns the Big Mix holding, a multi faceted music machine. It is responsible for the release of classic tracks such as Rap de Felicidade, Som de Preto and Guerreiro. The Big Mix is also a daily radio show presented by Marlboro airing Monday to Saturday on FM O DIA. Reportedly they attract over 350,000 listeners per minute.
Dj Marlboro currently has a residency in the prestigious LOV.E club in Sao Paolo and in LUCKY. He is also highly in demand internationally playing in electronic festivals such as Sonar in Spain, Brasil 40 Degrees in London, Summer Stage Central Park in New York, Tim Festival in Rio, Sonarsound in São Paulo and Elektronika in Belo Horizonte as well as touring the United States three times and playing in France, England, Croatia, Slovenia and Colombia.

DJ SANDRINHO (CONTEXTO- CLEKCLEKBOOM) King of Baile Funk DJ Sandrinho (real name Sandro Dos Santos Lourenco), originates from the favela do Borel en Rio, starting his musical career at the age of 12, he followed his older brother’s footsteps, DJ Sapo Pemba into the sound systems of Rio. He started deejaying regularly and playing in the community radio stations of Rio’s favelas (Borel and Prazeres). In 1999 he got selected from among 50 winners of a contest to be resident dj at FURACAO 2000 a famous Riosound system and Carioca Funk label). From then on he was playing 3 times a week in different clubs and favelas in Rio. In 2000, He became the official DJ of Mister CATRA (the infamous Baile Funk MC) and toured with him for 4 years all over Brazil, often playing over 30 parties in the same week!

In 2003 he played with PUBLIC ENEMY (Premiacao Hutus Cinema Festival) all this time he was still producing tracks, most of which were being compiled on bootleg baile funk cds. 2004 was a very important year for Sandrinho, he was invited by Tchiky Al Dente (Favela Chic resident dj and half of Voltair production duo) for his 1st european dates (in London with DJ Patife and in Paris at Favela Chic) He then went on to tour in Brazil with MC Menor Do Chapa. His 1st 12’’ record will be released in Germany (Baile Funk Master) as well as some white label records for Australia. He is currently preparing for his 3rd european tour (Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, UK), which will be followed by his 1st North American tour. He is also working hard on his 1st solo album. Sandrinho is also a prolific Baile Funk producer, producing an average of 5 tracks per week, which are being admired and played by all djs who like Baile Funk (DJ Diplo from Philadelphia is a big fan of his work). He doesn’t hesitate to mix traditionnal Brazilian style with more electro sounds, as well as disco and rock (he did a great remix of the Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction). He can, if he chooses to, play only his productions and plays live with an MPC (sampler /sequencer) to play samples and beats. With a great dexterity he uses his MPC like a percussionsist and can alternate dj/live sets.

Sany Pitbull
Sany Pitbull is a leading figure in the world of Baile Funk, he has been on the scene for over 20 years, djing and producing tirelessly, creating some of the best known Baile tracks we know today. Sany Pitbull believes he was pushed forward into djing by his father who encouraged him to play music at parties they had at home, trusting him with the records and giving young Sany Pitbull the dj bug at an early age. In 1983 he went to his first Baile Funk ball and was hooked on the music, impressed with its electronic dance rhythm and the energy and enthusiasm it pummelled into the crowd. It was in the legendary bailes of Cashbox and Marcão that he learnt about the music and studied how to perform to a crowd.

Sany started by playing at nights such as Cova and Explosao, and has now been with the Pit Bull sound system for over 9 years, leading to his dj name Sany Pit Bull. He has been producing new Baile Funk tunes at a prolific rate and takes his inspiration form a variety of sources such as jazz, rock, or whatever he has been listening to in order to push forward his Baile productions. He is proud of the lack of prejudice in Baile Funk, the people who appreciate it value its freedom of expression and Sany Pitbull is keen to build on this and experiment with different sounds and samples.

Sany is a big advocate of the use of MPCs while djing. He is a master behind his MPC 2000 and uses it to devastating effect in front of the crowds at Funk balls. MPCs allow a freedom of expression while creating live mixes. His preferred style is to combine vinyl with his sampler, creating live Baile Funk in front of people’s eyes, manipulating the drums to create his own unique loops and breaks.
Sany is a truly international dj producing tracks with both a local and foreign markets in mind. When producing tracks for Europe he tries to include as much Brazilian influence into it as possible knowing that there is a huge interest in this more exotic sound for Western audiences. In contrast his tracks produced for local consumption might include a more Western music influenced theme. Thus educating both sides of the Atlantic with his own unique teaching style!

Last year Sany went for a tour in Europe that passed through Germany, France, England, Sweden and Denmark and has a tour of North America and Canada planned for the near future taking in Miami, New York, Atlanta, San Francisco, Portland, Orlando and even Hawaii in the US and Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto in Canada.
Sany Pit Bull can also be credited with aiding Diplo in his quest to locate the Baile Funk scene when he visited Rio in 2005 with M.I.A. He wanted to see Baile Funk played in the favelas and came to Cantagalo joining Sany Pitball on some of his live sets.
Sany Pitbull has recently released his 12” EP on the 'Baile Funk Masters' series of German Man Recordings.
A great mini documentary is available on you tube featuring Sany Pitbull as he takes you through a history of Tamborzao Baile Funk. See here!

Dj Cabide
Everything started for Dj Cabide in 1987 when he started to frequent Baile Funk balls with his friend, while they were dancing however he was transfixed by the dj’s leading to a passion for djing and a prolific djing career in the Baile Funk balls of Rio.
Cabide and his friend DJ Vitor started to buy records together. Cabide appeared in a ball in Catherine in the Bahian square in ’88. In ’89 he began to frequent all the balls and started to become well know amongst the regular funkeiros along with his friend Dj Bicudo from the Tauru’s Team. By this time he was buying more and more records with the help of his family.

In ’90 he entered the Express Rio team, which was when he decided to take his first course with the ‘Insane person Academy of Dj’s. (With Dj Jorge Malice from the Inflames team.) After a year of steady training he was ready to play at his own balls. Later he trained briefly with the team of Dj Reserves, starting the balls at the beginning of the evening. After ’92 Dj Cabide started to play with Maneiro Kokota’s team ‘The Drop’ (previously Kokota) where he began playing on the radio in the old Press FM. The program was produced by Dj Gramaster Rafael in the program ‘Sound of the balls, combing the teams from ‘The Drop’ and Touch records. Dj Gramaster liked what he heard and went with ‘The Drop’ to some of their balls and was spun out by the way they rocked the parties and got people dancing and partying.

From then on Gramaster invited them to play a special weekly show every Thursday on ‘Sound of the Balls’ Since then Cabide has continued to progress and excel in his use of new technologies in the balls. He has mastered the use of his MPC and can be heard to rip it up in some of the biggest parties in town. As well as this Dj Cabide is able to offer personal Dj tuition! Go to his website to learn more, although written in Portuguese it is possible to watch his expert use of his MPC demonstrating its capabilities as an ideal tool for the live production of Baile Funk sampling. Also in this section is a Potuguesse documentary about the history of Taborzao funk, the fast paced booty beat Baile Funk, we all know and love. If anyone could produce this with subtitles then we are on to a winner.
